I got a letter that said my husband I didn't file taxes in 1997. I only have tax records back to 1998. If we didn't file I don't know why, we were so poor we probably would have gotten a refund. To get to the point, the letter is titled, North Carolina Department of Revenue Final Notice of Tax Assessment Individual Income. It goes on to say "Immediate action is required. The deparment of Renvenue previously sent you a Notice of Tax Assessment. Our records indicate that you have not paid the tax due. THe assessment is now final and your payment is due immediately. The Deparment can proceedd to collect the amoutn due in accordance with the porcedures set out in the back of this notice." The back of the notice says they could garnish our wages, issue a warrant directing the sherrif to levy and sell our property, or issue a judgment. The amount of tax they say I owe is 1452.00 plus a penalty fee of 871.00 plus interest of 567.52 for a total of 2890.00. This is all in NC, we now live in PA. My question is , "what should I do?" I don't have that much money to give them. We own a trailer that someone is living in and making payments to us but we are giving most of that money to the mortgage holder because it is not paid off, still owe 9000 on it. Please help. Darry
