bad credit Hospital bills

I just had a credit report for a loan and found out I owe a very large sum of money for hospital bills. I was not aware of this because my children had medical insuurance (medicaid) and somehow this was over looked. I talked to one company who told me if I prove my kids was covered they will clean up my record. But when I called the other company they told me I owe them and some of the things they are collecting for is the same bills from the other collection agency. I tryed to tell the lady but she said I had to make arrangements to pay these. This bills took place in 1997 why didnt they contact me I have lived in the same place with the same address and phone number for the past 8 years. My husband owns his own carpet business and I am on disabilty. We are strapped for cash. Any Ideas? Thanks
