Fell for a CA trick

a CA called national capital funding out of buffalo, NY called me all of a sudden (this was a few months ago) without any previous correspondence regarding a charged off (in 1999) providian account...they gave me all sorts of threats and i was scared...they claim they needed $1000 settlement by the next day or they would sue. i grabbed my credit card and made a western union transaction online. after they got their money they sent me a letter saying the debt was satisfied. and just today i got another notice about the providian debt and this time from another CA...demanding the full amount again! i called the company saying i paid this debt through another agency and faxed the letter to them. why did the first CA, national capital funding, give me all these threats, and i pay them, then re-sell my account to another agency? i feel like a fool paying NCF in the first place.
