Camco - Need Help Please

I was contacted by phone from Camco.
They said that I owed on a credit card from 1988.
I admit I had a credit card in the 1980's that I did not pay.
I messed up and gave them my checking account information over the phone and they had me post date three checks.
My question is would it be enough just to stop payment on the checks or should I close the account.
I am waiting for a couple of things to clear before I can close the account.

Dear Mr. ****, In reference to our conversation on 08/02/2003, regarding your FIRST CARD account, CAMCO proposes the following settlement: Upon receiving your post dated check (post dated for 10/31/2003) for the amount of $675.00 by 08/02/2003 and this payment clears as paid, your account will be settled in full.
If for any reason, this settlement offer is not met, this offer becomes null and void and the full balance of $2,922.81 will become due.
