Hi. Brief background.... At 18 I, like many people, went away to college and had credit cards thrust at me like nobody's business. By age 21 my credit was pretty screwed and I honestly didn't care too much so given the opportunity I screwed it up even more. Now it's been a few years and I'm a bit wiser and I want to fix up my credit. I'm going to be graduating from grad school in about 2 years and I'd like to do something crazy (note sarcasm) like buy a house or buy a new car after I graduate. I pulled my credit report tonight (low 500's OUCH) and printed out all of the accounts that are in collections and to be honest the accounts in collections aren't that bad... only about 2300 bucks worth. So here are my few questions to those who will be nice enough to help me out. 1. I have the address to the CA as well as how much I owe them (according to my credit report). Do I just send them in a check saying this is payment for account # such and such, please reflect this payment on my credit report??? 2. I had a car repo'd in late 97 or early 98 and the repo shows up on my credit report but the 3500 dollars I supposidly owe them after they auctioned my truck is nowhere to be found in any collection agency. They threatened to sue me a zillion times a few years ago and never did, so does that mean they finally gave up? 3. The "bad" accounts (Ie. the repo I had) that are due to expire in the next few months..... do they just "fall off" my credit report or do I have to request that they be removed? If so, how? Thanks for any help/guidance you can offer. I am just about to turn 26 (end of the month) and lately it has become very evident that I cannot simply bury my head in the sand when it comes to the mistakes I made when I was younger.
