Buying a house with bad credit

Just curious if it is better to try and settle chargeoffs now and buy a house in 2 years or what? I have
Citi $2600, charged off 12/02
Cap 1, $700 charged off 12/02 husband has
First USA/Bank One, $9000, charged off 12/02 Husband was laid off last year which is why we got behind, but we are doing okay right now. Just trying to figure out the best approach to be able to buy another house. We just found out we are pg again and will need a bigger house in a couple of years, just curious if I should try and settle these now or what would be in our best interest. I have heard that you can't get a mortgage with a charge off showing, is that true? We should have a good down payment in a couple of years when we will be ready to buy. Or are we stuck where we are until the 7 year mark hits?
