collection agency threatens via telephone

can a collection agency just suddenly call you from out of the blue without first sending anything in writing? one has done that with me. i never heard of this agency...and i don't know how they got my phone number when mine is unlisted. i did not speak with them but they left this message on my answering machine. i did not return their call. what should i do?
