However, if Providian did, in fact, SELL the debt to a CA, then I don't see any way that ARI can be an 'assignee' of Providian. They *could* be an assignee of Unifund if Unifund is, in fact, the new 'owner' of the debt.

This sounds like its primed for a motion for discovery. Make them cough up who REALLY owns the debt. However, if you paid off Providian, then someone is going to have to produce proof that you owe ANYTHING !
