A process server has the right to "lurk" so long as he acts lawfully. The notice is likely court paperwork of some kind, possibly a summons and complaint. If he actually "gets" you, you are not obligated to say ANYTHING. He does not have the right to hurt you in any way. If he does anything out of line, call the police immediately.

I am not sure it's wise for you to go looking for the roommate on your own--file reports with your local police and provide any info you may have on her possible whereabouts, her routines, the names of her boyfriend, friends and family, but leave the actual searching to the authorities. If she was dishonest enough to do this to you, no matter how good of friends you may have been, she is not going to voluntarily "fess up" to this. Why would she if she thinks she can pin it on you and walk scot free?

Take care and keep us posted.
