RJM Aquisitions/Fingerhut...a surprisingly good experience

Hello, My wife had a collection from RJM Acquisitions on her Experian account for $214. It was listed as opened april of last year.
She challenged the item thru experian, and it came back verified yesterday. She called RJM today and asked them to send her any verification materials. The guy said he couldn't and said he would remove the item, close the account and send her a letter stating such. He explained that RJM bought 8 million accounts from fingerhut when they went bankrupt (I didn't know they had), that may explain why a lot of people are showing RJM info on their Credit Reports.
How can experian say something is verified when the company (RJM) can't even do it?
