Should I get new CC or get added to wife's

I havn't had a credit card since 1997 when I colsed all my accounts after a divorce. I've since found out I should have left at least one open. Here are my questions:

1. Should I get a new CC or get added to my wife's? She has had the card since Aug of last year. Would that help my credit rating, as the account has already been open a year?
2. Is there a major diffence in secured vs unsecured cards as far as how it affects your credit score?
