Bounced ALOT of checks....help

My 20 YO stupid-stepson (love him dearly) bounced a bunch of $4.00 to $10.00 checks at places like 7-11. The bank did not close his account and now he has
!!thousands of!! $ in NSF and collection agency notices. No one is calling (yet) and the "criminal" activity has ceased. When he wrote these checks he was losing his apartment (not evicted) and had lost his job (no excuse, but) and was in a really bad place. We "rescued" him and have been helping him put it back together. I would love any and all advice on how I can help him deal with the inevitable.
