The IRS is a very interesting organization...your answers depend on who you talk to there. With that said; you have an option available called an "Offer-in-Compromise" where you can request that the IRS settle for an amount far less than the taxes owed. I have tried to complete one myself and it was rejected. Now I have a CPA doing one. Keep in mind that they can issue a lien against all your property and seize assets and past due taxes can be taken from Social Security Benefits.
Best that you get all of your tax returns together and see a good CPA pretty quick.
