If you owe currently collectible taxes, and you are not able to pay, you can ask them to put you into uncollectable status. They will review your case periodically to see if you can pay.

Whatever you do, do not ignore them. Contact them, keep good records- who you spoke to, time and date, and follow that up with a written confirmation of your understanding of the conversation. Find out what your options are and then proceed from there.

Keep going up the chain of command if you get shut down on a lower level. The higher you go, the more likely you are to find someone who will work with you.
