Are you the executor of the estate? If so, you will file the case for probate at your courthouse.

One of the next steps is to notify any creditors so they can file a claim. If there are no assets, the court will notify them that there is no money available to pay the claim.

You are not responsible for any debts incurred by the deceased family member.

You will probably have to place a notice in the paper notifying anyone with claims to file them.

The courthouse staff can probably assist you with this procedure. You might also want to visit your local library and look for a nolo self help book on handling this matter.
