I have a friend who asked me about how long a debt can be reported after it is charged off.

He has a debt that was charged off in 1996. It was sold to a collection agency in 2003 & has reappearred.

The reporting agencies basically keep reporting it, even though this friend/client has sent them letters demanding that it be taken off as an old debt for the FCRA & sending them proof that is was charged off in 1996. The Credit reporting agency seems to feel that since the debt was sold, it is a new debt.

Anyone had anyluck forcing these morons to stop reporting debt that is 1) 7 years old & 2) that the STOL has passed on?
