Need Help disputing repo collection from 6 yrs ago

I'm in AZ. I had a car repo'd in 8/98. My 1st missed pymt was approx. 12/97. In 8/98 the cred union mailed me a ltr stating that my car was repo'd. All this time has passed & I've never rcvd anything stating a defiency/amt due. I know from CR it shows $9500 bal. I pd the cred union $3K on an unsecured loan last yr and they never brought up this debt. I've contacted the cred union this past wk saying, hey, I want this off my credit, I'll pay you $250 to settle and have it removed (I know ridiculously low amount). If SOL in AZ is 6 yrs, and it 1st became delinq in 12/97, is there time up at the end of this year to collect? And, second, since I've never rcvd any collections notice, notice of an amt due, nothing, (although I obviously owe something) am I better off making a settlement or what should my 1st step be? My goal is to get it removed completely off of the CR or at least say Pd in Full. CU mgr emailed me and said my offer of $250 is not acceptable and to get back to him with a reasonable offer because he can still send me to collections. Did I open up a whole can of worms too soon? Help Please!
