DLA original creditor VS CRA

I have a copy of my equifax report and it lists 2 credit cards that were both charged off. Neither of the orignal companies are listed on my credit report because the debt is over 7 yrs old and it has since dropped off. BUT, this crummy Asset Acceptance has since put these back on my credit report with DLA as 10/96 & 11/96. They reported these both in 7/03. How is that possible if the original creditors have since dropped off my credit report? Shouldn't they have to go by the same date the payment was missed or does Asset Acceptance get to start a whole new set of dates when they buy the account? Your help is much appreciated.
