That's actually what I had to do. When I graduated college I finally managed to get a job after almost a year of searching, living with parents, etc. I was offered a good job in Miami, went to go put a deposit in a decent neighborhood (Miami Lakes), was told my application was rejected because I had bad credit, looked online for a roommate, found an OK hole in a semi-ghetto area of Miami Beach and drove 15 miles inland (against traffic - not so bad) every day. Don't get me wrong. It's not easy. It's a big fucking pain in the ass, actually. But, it's not the end of the world. You WILL recover. From this moment forward, don't pay anything late, especially scheduled payments (car). Seven years is a long time, but thank God most of my shit is at least 5 years old and I've got about 2 years to go for decent-to-perfect credit. I can't wait.
