StudentLoan Woes

Hi all,
I have a quick question:
I took out 4 student loans with Citibank between 9/93 - 9/95. Because I had to leave college for medical reasons, I wasn't able to make payments after I left. However, I recently received my credit report and it shows that my date of last activity was 1/98. How could that be if I never made a payment?
Could that be disputed for verification with the cra first or should I call citibank to verify first? It's been seven years since 95/96.
Also, if this student loan was sold, can both companies show the balance as owed on my credit report, or is this double entries for the same account? My equifax report says I owe more than 44K when the loan is only for 20K.
Any help would be appreciated...
