WHYCHAT, Small Claims Court?????

Hi, I have a scenario for you if you can assist, my sister who lives in CA, was served for small claims court from her ex mother in law claiming my sister owes her $4,000 that was borrowed in 95,there was no contract of any sort and any monies borrowed was from her ex husband. my sis believes this is a ploy from the new wife to get back at her as they are still going through nothing but drama and court. What would the approach be in terms of a defense? although it is considered a civil case would the SOL apply in a situation like this. any advice would greatly be appreciated.
