My 2 cents.

1 - David is correct, closing a positive tradeline, especially one you've had for a good while, will actually HURT your scores. These types of accounts help as far as length of credit history and good standing.

2 - If you still want to close the account, do so IN WRITING ONLY. Do NOT call them, it will not hold water. Send the letter certified, RRR, and request that the account be closed and reported on your credit report as 'closed by consumer'.
