I opted to forfeit my security deposit and pay one months rent in order to get out of an auto-renewal clause in my lease. I just didn’t want to deal with the whole thing. I thought the whole ordeal was over, but this was not the case. The property manager still sent us a bill for cleaning our apartment. Now they want us to pay an additional $319 to cover cleaning costs and repairs. My landlord sent me a letter stating that if I don't pay the balance in full they will report it to Equifax. Can they legally report this as a collection account, or should the proper process be to take me to small claims court. Also, where can I get information about laws pertaining to credit reporting?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
