Judgement Question

My friend recently was made aware that he has two judgements against while trying to refinance his house. They were filed in 1998 while he was going through a divorce. He was not living at his house during the time of filing and claims he never received a court notice from the creditors (Ford Credit and medical bill).
Is there any recourse he can take against them since he claims he never received a summons for a court appearance and if so, how should he handle it?
