You haven't had much contact with collection agencies before have you ?

RMA is one of the lowest of the low-life scum collection agencies. They will LIE, LIE, LIE, just like the rest of their ilk.

First thing to do, STOP TALKING ON THE PHONE !
It is POINTLESS to do so and wastes your time, and energy. They LOVE the intimidation and making you cry is a victory for them. So, take the phone AWAY from them - its their favorite weapon. Don't believe for one minute that the other employee was fired, I'd be willing to bet that person is still there.

This bull about you having to send them money, NOW, is a tactic, a pressure tactic and its crap. Its also the end of the month and all these scum CA phone drones are out for their big Burger King Coupon monthly bonuses. Believe me, there is NO deadline !

Couple of questions:
What state are you in ?
How old is the debt, when did you last pay the original creditor ?

If you want to pay this and can, then you're going to have to negotiate ONLY in WRITING. Make your offer, tell them that as a condition for your payment you want any entries they've made to your credit report removed, and do NOT send them a dime until you get a signed agreement back. Send everything certified, RRR and keep copies of everything.

PUll your credit reports too. RMA is notorious for illegally re-aging old debts, especially if its an old one where the statute of limitations has run out.
