Sued by Capital One $1800 in CA

I was served a Summons today and need to know what I should do next. Can I negotiate with Capital One to pay this debt off or do i have to go throught their attorney? Can I settle outside of going court? This credit card was opened in 2000. I don't have any assets. What can I expect to have to pay. Thank you for your advise.
