I can understand that someone has fallen on tough times and is unable to pay off debts immediately. I know my husband and I were there many years ago. We did come to agreements with the few that we had and we paid them off over many years. This taught us so much about being responsible people and not living beyond what you can afford. To advise someone to deny any knowledge of debts that are recent and that they know belong to them is wrong. It only reinforces the idea that we are not accountable for things that we do or situations in our lives. Far too often what will happen is that a person will eventually be given another chance and they will do the same exact things they did before, fully expecting that they can just pass it off onto others.

HB, my answer would be to try to work out an arrangement with each agency and tough it out until you've taken care of everything. It won't be easy but you will be able to come out of it with a great deal of self respect, knowing that you are an honest person who is deserving of that second chance. You will have most certainly earned the privilege of owning your own home one day. It won't be easy. You may end up eating alot of boxed mac and cheese or ramen noodles (I can't stand to look at either of those foods now!) but you will be glad when all is said and done. And all of this is far more valuable than money. Believe me.

Good luck, HB
