Noticed the comments about PRA and was curious to how it turned out. I used to work for them and know first hand at how they do business. I will tell you this. They are very cautious in handling accouts and the "Employment Verification" letter you received wasn't sent in order to scare you, but more likely to get your attention. Most "debtors" don't respond to normal mailings or even return messages left on machines. The main excuse: "You didn't say where you were calling from." Well, under FDCPA, collectors are not allowed to give out that information and most debtors are informed of that. You asked what should you do? Well, if you owe the debt then I would suggest working with the company because most will work with you as long as you are being reasonable. If you don't feel you owe the debt then dispute it in writing to the company and the three major Credit Bureau Agencies. I would advise that you make sure you have a valid dispute before wasting your time, but under Federal Law you do have the right to dispute any debt and my history with PRA tells me that they will validate the debt and then procede on. I would also tell you that once the debt is validated you will probably realize that it has been so once it reaches a court room. I say this because they go to great time and expense to do this and once it's done then the ball is in their court and you are out of the picture as far as making a decision on how to handle the account. I am in no way trying to discourage you from investigating if you have a valid dispute, but only want you to have a clear picture of how everything works. Hope this does some good and would be interested to see how things turn out for you. Best Wishes.
