Whoa.. wait a minute ! The account was "shutdown/frozen" FIVE YEARS AGO !! ??
What EXACTLY do you mean by that ?

How do you know it was only charged-off within the past year ? Are you certain it wasn't charged-off 5 years ago ?? If you don't have your credit reports, you need to pull them now and find out when the last payment date was or look for the come-off date on your Experian report.

If there's ANY possibility it was, in fact, charged-off 5 or 5+ years ago, then it may not be wise at ALL to pay them ! The SOL in NJ is 6 years, so you could be VERY close to that.

By law, they MUST charge-off a debt after 180 days of non-payment or insufficient payment. They may wiggle a little bit to 210 days, but that's IT.

Yes you can send them a Cease and Desist letter to stop ALL phone calls, at work and at home. The notification to them that you aren't allowed to take calls at work is enough notice for them to HAVE to stop calling you.

However, RMA is pure scum and will ignore anything verbal, even though its legal in that instance. Send the letter, certified, RRR.
You NEED to be tough, forget nice.. they will NOT be nice as you've found out. You have to grow a tough skin and don't let them intimidate you into anything.
