NC - SOL, for CC account - please advise

I apologize in advance for this, but I'm a little confused on how to interpret the SOL for a particular situation. I have recently pulled my credit reports from the big 3, and wanted to get verification on the SOL for one of my accounts. I live in NC which has a 3 yr limit but I'm trying to determine what the starting date is for the 3 yr clock.
I had a card w/FCNB (speigel), opened in 99, first 30Day deliq. in 1/2000. It was at 180 days 12/2001 and the report shows as chgoff 1/2002. They passed the account onto an agency - RMA, and out of ignorance I set up a payment plan w/ them, that recently ended, since FCNB (Spiegel) is now bankrupt. The account has now landed w/ Academy collections and the jerks are driving me nuts, with their lawsuit threats and demanding payment that is 3700.00 for an account showing on my report with a balance of 2748.00.
I want to tell them to kiss off but wasn't sure of the SOL since I did make a payment to the first collection agency in 6/2003 as part of the payment plan I mentioned above. Did my making these payments reset this clock?
Sorry to be a dummy on this one but just wanted to get some advice on how to proceed with them, as they are calling daily. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
