credit card debt

i have just recieved a summons from craig r goodman law offices in atlanta, ga. about a credit debt with "discover card". i have looked on this site and seen some promissing communication. my wife is wanting to pay someone to help us with our problems, but after a short time researching i think it is possible to do it ourselves. (they want $4000.00)
i am intending to send the law offices a "attempt to validate letter" and am wondering if i should or not. please respond, as my time is running out on this. thank you in advance, KDR
