Yeah, Florida is a mess. I got a summons for a pre-trial hearing months ago for a debt that is not mine. (same name- but I have a rather common name) I strode in there very confidently to clear up the matter and was shocked when the judge said "When are you going to pay this debt?" I was aghast! Isn't there supposed to be a presumption of innocence in this country? -Not in Florida! I replied that the debt wasn't mine and didn't have enough time to explain fully. Now I'm waiting for a court date. All I ever received from the CA lawyer (months later) was a copy of a mastercard statement. I hope they'll have to PROVE this is my account, which they can't because it is NOT ME, just my same name. If they somehow win (anything seems possible in this sleazy legal system) I will declare bankruptcy before paying a debt that is not mine! This is enough to make me want to move out of Florida.
