Try this one on for size: While employed for a company, I was given a BofA card for making purchases for the company. I did not personally apply for the card, nor was I responsible for paying the bill. My job was to attach receipts to the bill and send it to the company for payment (I worked in a satellite office). Both the company's name and my name were on the card. I quit this job in April 2000, and the cc account was closed by the company at this time. This year, when pulling an annual credit report, a company unknown to me had requested my report. When I called to investigate, I learned that this company was actually a law firm that does collections, and they pulled up my credit report regarding this BofA card. Allegedly, my former company left about $600 unpaid on this account, and BofA sold it to the law firm for collection. Since that time, the law firm has called me (approx 3 times) trying to convince me that it is my obligation to pay this debt and/or con me into stating I'm the responsible party. Nothing has been sent in writing (this all began in July). Here's the interesting part: The BofA card has never appeared on my credit report (is not there now), nor did BofA ever try to contact me or collect from me re: this bill (my current address has been available and mail forwarded at all times for the last ten years). If I had a legal obligation for this, wouldn't something have appeared on my credit report from BofA? My situation seems to be unique, and I can't get good information from anyone, including the FTC. Can this law firm place a negative in my credit report (as they have threatened) when BofA did not or perhaps could not. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
