Were you served a summons ?
If not, you need to get a copy of the case file from the courthouse and see what the proof of service says.

You're lucky all they took was $279.

They MIGHT be able to garnish your wages, what state are you in ?

If a garnishment order goes thru, you should be notified that its happening and be given the opportunity to challenge it.
