Under Federal law, the maximum amount that can be garnished is 25% of net income (after taxes). If total income is 30 times minimum wage or less , no garnishment is allowed.

If garnishment process is inititated, you would have the opportunity to go to court to request a reduction or cancellation based on your circumstances.

Nothing can happen until they go to court and get a judgment. If they go to court, you could present your payment arrangement to the judge- something you can live with. Next step would be to ask the judge to withold the judgment while you are making payments.

Your state may have exemptions such as head of household, etc.
