My mother has been receiving calls and taking messages from this company asking for me. Finally I called them today and the first girl I spoke with told me I bounced a check in 1998 at Ames Department Store for $28.46 but I needed to pay them $153.46 total including fees. I first tried to negociate the amount due down to a resonable amount and the girl hung up on me. I called back she told me they are doing me a favor and I need to pay by friday. When I told her I would gladly pay next week she said if I don't pay by friday she will walk the claim herself to be processed in court. I asked to speak with the attorney and she said not unless this goes to court. I told her I am trying to work with them and she said you have until friday and hung up. I decided to research JBC & Associates and found many interesting claims on this web site. A few of them almost identical. My question is regarding the company I wrote the check to. I believe they have gone bankrupt and closed the doors. I understand from reading the advice on this page, that I should pay the company (in this case Ames) directly. I am not sure how to handle this. Just a little side note--They called me back to harrass me some more within 10 minutes and at this point I told them I have been reading about them on the internet. The girl hung up and didn't call back. Well, she hasn't yet.
