Only settle if they agree in writing that the account will be reported as paid in full. A reporting that the account was settled for something less than full payment is very bad on your credit report. You can prevent them from reselling your account by making sure your agreement with them states that it will not be resold, and insist that they issue you a 1099 Misc for the amount not paid.
I know this sounds difficult, but remember they paid probably less than .10 on the dollar for your account. It is all about the money. They want it and if pushed they will agree to your requests to get it. Make sure it is writing before you agree to do anything.
