hospital/doctor debt

I was in a job that offered no insurance. I had an emergecny...I had a stroke. Now, I have all these doctor and hosptial bills that want full payment immediately. I've been out of work since the stroke and living on savings. I paid $10 to each bill just to hold them off. Now the hospital has turned it over to a collection agency that is now calling me all the time. I have yet to receive a statement from them. I am startign a new job on Monday. I don't want them to take me to court and garnishee my wages. What do I do now? I am willing to make payments, but I can't afford what they say is 'acceptable.' I keep getting this payment is not acceptable. Well, they accept them. What are my choices here? I don't know what else to do at this point.
