Even if you "settle" it will not be off your report, the balance will be resold to another CA and be on your report 3 times, once from the OC as a chargeoff, once from your present CA as a paid/settled collection and a third from the new CA for the balance as a collection. You did not say what State you are in, or if you are beyond SOL, if you are, you can send the SOL letter to the CA and the follow up dispute to the CRA. At WORST, even if this tactic does not delete the item from your report, you can have the collection amount escrowed at the closing pending deletion from your credit report with proof that you are not legally responsible for the payment.
