There is a special place in my dark heart for people in your predicament. The Collection Agencies in a more forthright era would have been called criminals whose specialty was extortion.
The operating principle of collection agencies is to threaten, shame, frighten and as you so precisely state, otherwise terrorize people into paying money which is no longer collectable. The collection crooks pocket this, sending some of it north over the Canadian border and from there to some rather unsavory pockets where it funds activities inimical to the well being of Americans.
The government neither cares nor knows that this debt is well beyond the statute of limitations and thus uncollectable. Again the thugs who filed suit are simply abusing the free resources of government to perform their goonwork, as it was called when folks were a bit more plainspoken.
You can easily stop this as LadynRed so well describes. Make sure you file and answer with the courthouse contesting this on grounds it is SOL. Keep copies for yourself, making sure to get them date-time stamped by the court clerk.
Now, it's time to cut these unwashed skunks off at their knobby little knees. They have filed an illegal suit against you violating various state and federal laws in the process.
Call the Federal Trade Commission - number available from this website - and file by phone a complaint right away. Call your state Attorney General and do the same thing. Be sure to state your age, there are no doubt laws in your state having to do with Exploitation of the Elderly. Follow up both phone complaints with letters and any documents these crumbs sent you. Take careful note any calls from them.
Now, this is your turn to go where they cannot. Take the battle to where your enemy cannot tread for fear of perishing. Tell your doctor of the distress you are experiencing. Your use of the word 'terror' is most apt, you will read postings from others on this board describing the conduct of collectors with precisely that word.
Collectors indeed have become rather bold during the last several years deliberately terrorizing us so as to induce a state of terror which overrides rational thought, so as to make it easier to pick our pockets with our cooperation.
Causing distress is another prohibited activity under federal regs, to do so to one of your years' wisdom is all the more serious. Use this to your advantage and to their reduction.
Stay in touch, your plight is particularly of interest for various reasons. You cannot reason with these bums, neither can you win their affections nor earn their respect. Negotiation is futile. Hitting them back vigorously where it hurt$ is the only way to defend yourself. They filed an illegal suit. Good for you. Too bad for them. They can be countersued for damages as well.
Nail them,
