Normally the court will send you a copy as well. Chances are that Household's copy of the interrogatories just got to first, which is oft the case as the court usually takes several days to mail something. Household sent you a copy as a courtesy. In addition, this gives you more notice to answer the questions. And no, you wouldn't go to jail! Being in contempt in this instance would just mean that you "refused" to give the plaintiff discovery, and the "contempt of court" would usually allow them (Household) to get a default judgement. Somewhat similiar to not showing up on your trial date. Again, I am not sure about Iowa's civil procedure laws. Do a search on google and they should be easy enough to find. Really it all depends purely on your states civil procedure laws as to what steps could be taken. There is one thing that is no question: if you wish to fight this case, you must continue with the process and answer the interrogatories. In addition, you may even be able to send your own set of interrogatories to Household if you so desire. I think getting an attorney is your best bet.
