Do not say another word to these criminals. They are setting you up. They are the ones behaving in a fraudulent manner, it's why they accused you of it which by the way is a violation of federal law.
Put nothing in writing to these thugs either. If they send you something keep it for evidence against them. They cannot sue you for fraud, that's an illegal threat which should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Call them tomorrow and file a complaint by phone and follow up with a letter including all written documents from these crooks.
They wanted a check number so they could invade your bank account and steal money from it and as well pass along all your financial data to fellow predators in the collections 'industry'.
Write to your state Attorney General and file a complaint against this company detailing all their statements and actions.

Never, ever, ever pay one penny, not one wooden nickel to a collection agency. The Statute of limitations will be restarted and they will harass you forever.

Never ever 'settle' with them regardless of how sweet their well-rehearsed lies. The allegedly 'forgiven' portion of the debt will be sold to another predatory collector who will start harassing you. Additionally, they will send the IRS a 1099 informing them that the 'forgiven' part of the debt is income.

These bums are trying out a nit-wit too-clever-by-half trick of cold calling and blindsiding you with their false assertions of a standing agreement to pay in hope you would become frightened, confused, thus more easily manipulated into giving them your money. Never do this.

You handled this beautifully. By telling them you needed time to think this over you showed them you are no easy mark. You alerted them to the fact that your husband and your attorney are privy to their conduct. Good for you, makes it difficult for them.

They are the enemy, a relatively new Nineties-type scam 'industry' specializing in legalized extortion. It's that simple.

Believe absolutely nothing they say. If they tell you the earth is round, reply by joining the Flat Earth Society.

You can send them a Cease & Desist letter - available from this site- to stop their idiotic terrorizing calls.
By virtue of age you might be protected by Exploitation of the Elderly Statutes in your state, your state Attorney General can help you there also.
If they call, forget about taping-consent laws. Tape every call, that's what some FTC investigators will tell you. These lousy criminals tell all kinds of lies, make all nature of threats secure in the knowledge that most of the time they aren't taped thus it's considered Hearsay evidence by the court. Tape them, as one FTC person asked "How else are you going to prove what they say?"
They have committed a slew of violations already. Please keep us abreast how this proceeds and by all means ask questions. Many fine people are here to generously share their hard-earned knowledge with you so that you can continue your life in peace free from the terroristic kleptomaniacal threats of half-wits laughingly known as 'collections professionals'.
These creeps are never to be trusted, ever. They are just like the lazy dumbells who break into unoccupied homes of working people in search of lightweight items to steal for drug money except these jackanapes perform their thievery under legal cover of a collection agency.
They cannot do anything to jeopardize your employment, even suggesting such a thing is again another violation to be reported to the FTC.
Aren't they brave little damp-pants heroes, picking on women? At least the jerk who breaks into homes operates above ground in plain sight of neighbors. These idiots do their telephone-terrorism while cowering behind a toilet in the public restroom of some bus terminal in Crackerland. Nail them.
Strength and Honor,
