Thank you both for responding to me, but now I'm even more confused.

I don't really know if they're a fake AMEX ... but I can't be sure. It seems a little too coincidental that they "received my file" shortly after I denied (on the phone) to AMEX that was who they were looking for. I suspect that AMEX knew I was being untruthful, and they want their money. Why else, after 13+ years, would this account suddenly be sent for collection? It's simply not logical. --- However, I will e-mail you information you request and answer your questions.

As far as canceling my account, that's also what I'm suspecting could happen, but only after they tack on the old debt to my current AMEX card. I mean ... I still owe them the money, don't I? Maybe not legally, but at least morally. So, it becomes a new debt. Failure to pay and bye-bye card, plus, it's considered a new debt, in their eyes, so it's reportable. And even if they don't, they don't need a reason to terminate my account. They don't want my business, plain and simple. And THAT would definitely put a mark on my credit (account closed by creditor). Not pretty.

In the final analysis, the money really is not the issue. I'll do just about anything to keep AMEX from hurting my credit. Perhaps, I should tell the credit agency to take a hike and then call AMEX to resolve the problem directly. Call it a good faith gesture ... anything to protect my credit.
