Rich,

The really dumb mistake I made was even calling them in the first place, despite the advice not to. I asked why they sent so-and-so's mail to my house. I gave them my real last name but made up a phony first name. And THEN, like a dope, I call them back the next day and "talk business." I never actually said, "Yeah, I owe them the money," but I did kind of talk about the SOL and I would send them a "leave me alone" letter. Plus, I also said I would consider their offer. If that ain't an admission, I don't know what is. However, I never gave it to them in writing, which may be my only saving grace ... I'm skeptical about any company that says "This call may be recorded ...," which their company did. On the other hand, they now have my full married name, which means 1 + 1 = 2.

As far as losing the AMEX card ... truthfully, I think it would be in my best interest if I closed the account asap. I liked the prestige and premise of the card because you have to pay things off in a very timely manner ... but ... I've really used it far more than I should, sometimes $1000-1500 a month, and you have to pay that back right away. If I had a "normal" credit card, one that you pay back over time, I would be limited insofar as how much use I would have to spend. With the AMEX, it's too easy to run it through the roof and then worry about where the money will come from. To someone with money problems, AMEX is both a blessing and curse.

I've read that it is not advisable to close credit card accounts - it looks bad on your credit report. But ... wouldn't it be better if I went ahead and closed the account before AMEX has a chance to? And, in doing so, wouldn't that permanently stop things right at the door, should I choose not to pay things?

Ever wish you were a kid again and the only thing you had to worry about was whether or not you passed your English exam?
