I asked the collection agency when they secured the account, and they said July 28th. This coincides with the two phone calls I had from AMEX asking if I was the same individual from years past.

My guess is, AMEX did some crossmatching on the SSN and realized that Jane Doe had the same SSN as Jane Smith. Ka-ching!!!

What I don't understand is why AMEX didn't simply pursue the matter directly with me: "Look, lady, we've matched up the SSNs, so why not just be honest." Instead, they send it off to the collection agency.

Trust me ... I'm taking all advice VERY seriously. I just need to talk things over with my husband and be totally certain about what I'm going to do before I do it.
