As to not advisable to closing credit card, it depends...It depends on what else you have on your report, how long the account has been active in comparison to other tradelines.

While, I do not profess to know anything about how FICO scores are computed, I gotta believe that closed by customer has got to be better than closed by merchant.

If you're not planning any major purchases or needs in the credit arena in the near term, shouldn't be a problem. If you're going to apply for another credit card, I'd do that first (ASAP) and then close the account.

You could always pull your reports and scores and see how they hold up as they stand now. Some of the silliest things seem to drop them down a bit.
