Ex-husband's bankruptcy

I have a friend who's ex-husband filed for bankruptcy. Some of the credit cards were joint and now her credit is destroyed. When a person files bankruptcy, does the other party on the joint cards have to sign anything? I know it makes HER liable for the debt but that seem unfair. She tried to get a car the other day and was declined. What does she need to do? flie bankruptcy herself? Is there and SOL on this for her?
