10 year old debt

I have a debt that is 10 years old. It was a loan I got for a car. To make a long story short the car was stolen insurance didnt pay off. This was in NY I know live in MO. Is this past the statute of limitations? What state would it be based on? How do I go about getting Proof? At this point it nolonger is on my credit report.
