Back in November 1993 I applied for and received a MasterCard from Shell through Chemical Bank which later went to Chase Bank. In late 1999 I began having problems keeping up with my minimum monthly payments; my CC account eventually went into default and was later charged off. In October 2000 I received a letter from a CA named First Select Financial that acquired my old charged off account from Chase in the amount of $7,825.00 and First Select wanted to collect. Phone calls soon started; I wrote FSF a letter demanding that they stop calling me; they did stop. Heard nothing more from FSF about the matter; that was in October 2000. Now three weeks ago I receive a letter from an attorney representing another CA; Credigy Receivables who acquired my old CC account from FSF and they now wanted to collect not $7,825.00 from me but $10,158.00. Soon after receiving their letter about three weeks ago; Credigy's phone calls started. Details of my old CC account: Chase Shell MasterCard Account opened - Nov. 1993 Account acquired by First Select - Oct. 2000 Account acquired by Credigy from First Select - ??/2003 Date of last activity on my old account - 02/11/2000 My state of residency at time account opened - MS My state of residency now - MS; always has been. What should I consider doing next? I don't have any money to hire a lawyer to fight this; I'm disabled and my only source of income is an SSI disability check in the amount of $368.00 a month, I do have Medicaid. I'm scared; can a CA garnish my SSI check? I don't know what to do; I'm scared; can anyone out there offer me any advice or suggestions? I need help.
