If the company failed to live up to their obligations, you may be able to defend a lawsuit based on breach of contract.

Althought they may sue for $700, this would seem to be more of a scare tactic, esp since they have imposed an artificial time deadline. The game here is to get you to send money before you can sit down and think things through.

If they do sue, you would always have the option of settling out of court which means that nothing would show up on your credit report.

It would probably cost them around $200 to file a lawsuit to collect 700 - they also have to show up in court and present their case.

P.S. If they are doing something wrong, you can always report them to the appropriate agencies and complain.

I think they are bluffing- trying to get you to pay first and think later.
